Dress Code Uniform Policy

Welcome Falcons!  John Muir Middle School is a uniform school, and students are expected to wear the school uniform each day. Please take a few minutes to review our Uniform Policy before the start of school.  

John Muir's Uniform Closet is available to support families who need assistance with school uniforms. Families are also encouraged to donate or exchange clean, gently used uniform items to help support other Falcon families. (Inquire at the attendance office.)

The colors red and blue, including all shades and variations (such as maroon, burgundy, navy, teal, and similar colors), are not permitted.

Shirts and Undershirts

• Tops must be a solid color: white, black, gray, purple, yellow, or green only
• Any logos on tops must be small (no larger than the bottom of a soda can) and appropriate such as a shirt label or designer label
• Students can wear any John Muir School T-shirt (given by school, purchased at school, or through PTSA)
• Shirts must cover the student's torso, including midriff.
• May not be see-through. Undergarments may not be visible.

Sweatshirts, Jackets & Sweaters 

• Must be a solid color: white, black, gray, purple, yellow, or green only
• Any John Muir School sweatshirt is allowed
• Appropriate small logos only  (no larger than the bottom of a soda can) and appropriate such as a designer label
• No large logos, patterns or designs for outside organizations or professional sports teams
• A uniform top must be worn underneath.
• Hoods may not be worn on campus at anytime

Pants, Shorts and Skirts

• Any solid black, gray or tan pants- no designs, stripes, holes above the knee, or see-through materials.  
• Must be worn at the waist or above the hips and cannot be showing undergarments (including shorts worn under pants).
• Tights and leggings (solid black, tan or gray only) may be worn under skirts

Backpacks

• No inappropriate images or writing, including but not limited to characters, cartoons, and logos
• Backpacks must not be a dominant shade of red or blue.

Shoes, Shoelaces, and Socks

• Shoes must not be a dominant shade of red or blue
• Closed-toe shoes with heel support only. (Crocs may be worn in sports mode only.)
• No steel toe, flip flops, slippers, slides or heels.
• Socks cannot be any shade of solid red or blue

Hats, Beanies and Hoods

• No hats, beanies or hoods may be worn on campus

Belts

• Belts must have plain buckles and be solid color: white, black, brown, tan, gray, purple, green, or yellow only
• Belts must be worn through belt loops and connected to pants at all times on campus

Accessories

• Hair accessories, lanyards, stickers on water bottles must all be school appropriate.
• Red/Blue accessories are not permitted (i.e. a large red/blue item attached to clothing or backpack)

PE Clothes

Free Dress / Spirit Days

Students may participate in free dress on designated Spirit Days and must follow all SJUSD handbook guidelines for Dress and Grooming, including the following:

• No predominantly red or blue clothing unless it is clearly a part of the Spirit Day theme
• Clothing must fully cover the torso and all undergarments. 
• No rips above the knee.
• No professional sports team apparel unless it is a part of the Spirit Day theme.
• No flip-flops, slides, or slippers.
• Students who are not participating in the Free Dress / Spirit Day theme must wear the regular school uniform to school.
