Welcome to the new school year! As a counseling team, we are ready to provide counseling services to ensure a great experience for all of our students.  Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Students are encouraged to reach out to a counselor if they have a school-related question, need social/emotional support or just need to talk to someone.

Referral Process
Students can be referred to the Counseling Department by their parent, teacher, principal, counselor, school support staff or self-referral.

To request a meeting with the Counselor, please contact the student’s appointed counselor via telephone or email. Students can also make a self-referral by stopping by the attendance office.

As part of San José Unified School District’s mission to eliminate the opportunity gap, our department invites parents to take part in the following workshops. Dates and times will be announced on the John Muir website, announcements and the parentlink. Workshops are OPEN to all grade levels, but are more relevant for certain grade levels as indicated below. Students are welcome to attend, unless noted*.
Dates are tentative…please check the school calendar. 

Middle School: Soaring to Success
Topics include navigating Canvas, Infinite Campus, Social Emotional Resources, and tips for school success.


Dangers of Online Gaming and Social Media with Youth- (6th-8th grade) *ADULT only*
Parents will learn how to teach their student to behave safely and participate responsibly in the digital world. The San Jose Police Department will present information on how to protect privacy, cyber-bullying, sexting and internet safety.
Please note this is an ADULT only presentation, due to the content presented.


Growth Mindset (7th grade)
Parents will learn about growth mindset and how they can help their student acquire this skill.

Supporting a Successful Student (7th grade)

Parents will learn about tools and resources to support their student in becoming a successful student. Topics covered include study habits, checking infinite campus and campus resources.

Building Post-secondary Aspirations: COLLEGE 101 (8th grade)

Parents will gain information on the different post-secondary options students have available. This includes university system requirements, financial aid and career options.

High School Here I Come! (8th grade)
Parents will learn about the differences in high school and how to begin to plan for these. We will also highlight the steps that need to be taken for your student to have a successful high school career. (Grading system, credits, graduation requirements and A-G requirements)
